What connection does a 12v TV use? 

The most common connection for a 12v smart TV for caravan would be via the use of a standard cigarette plug. The Cigarette plugs will connect into the 12v DC Cigarette socket. These sockets are most commonly fitted to Caravan's as the general connection from a battery source. 

It is possible to modify the connection on a 12 volt caravan TV, however, it would be best to confirm with the manufacturer that this does not void warranty in doing so. 

Does a 12 volt TV use a lot of power?

No, not really.

When it comes to camping or 'off-grid' power, it is important to use appliances that have the lowest power draw. This will allow you to run your 12v smart tv for caravan for longer periods of time without needing to recharge your battery system.

The most common size 12 volt TV in Australian is the 24" size TV.  This size 12v TV is ideal for Caravans, Motor-homes, or even stand alone off-grid systems. The 24 inch will have an average power draw from the battery system of between 2- 3 Amps per hour of use. This rating usually includes the use of the in-built DVD player. The main determinate in the overall power draw, however, comes down to the volume in which you are using your TV. The louder the TV = the heavier the overall power draw on the battery will be.

How long will a 12v TV run on a battery? 

The answer to this question depends on many things such as how big is your battery system, how big is the TV you are running, are you using the in-built DVD, how loud are you listening to the TV, etc. 

The average 24 inch 12v smart TV for caravan will draw approx 2 - 3 amps per every hour of run time. If you have a battery that is approx 100 ah, then the 12 volt tv will run for approx 30 - 50 hours of continuous use (100 AH / 2 - 3 Amps) 

Can I operate my caravan TV from 240V? 

Absolutely, however, you will require the use of a transformer, or power supply to do so. Many 12v camping Tv's do not come included with a transformer as they are ideally used in the caravan when you are away from mains power. 

If you have a battery in the caravan, and this charges from 240 volt when connected to mains power, then your 12volt tv can simply continue to run from the battery when you are on mains power. The TV will essentially be running from the battery, however, the battery will be charged from the 240v battery charger, thus, there will be no need for an additional power supply. 

If you do not have a battery within the caravan, or if you are looking to use your 12v camping tv in the home when not camping, then you will require a transformer or power supply in order to run your 12v camping tv from 240volt. 

Do 12V TVs come with built-in DVD players or smart TV functions?
